NASA Astronomical Picture of the Day, August 12, 2009
NGC55 (Caldwell 72) is is large, irregular spiral galaxy located in the southern constellation of Sculptor. It is a member of the Sculptor Group of galaxies that also includes NGC300, NGC253 and others, and is 5 million light years distant. The abundant, pink HII regions indicate that considerable star formation is occurring. There are many small galaxies in the background.
